Supplementary & Improvement Exams Guide
Didn't clear a subject, or want a better grade in one? Here's how the two most common second-chance exams work for Pakistani board students.
Supplementary exams — for students who didn't pass
A supplementary exam (sometimes called a "supply" exam) gives a student who failed one or more subjects in their annual exam a chance to retake just those subjects, without waiting a full year and repeating the whole class. Supplementary exams are usually held two to three months after the main annual result is announced.
- You only re-sit the subject(s) you failed — not the whole exam.
- Your board announces the supplementary exam date sheet separately from the annual one.
- You'll need to submit a supplementary exam form and fee by the board's deadline — missing this usually means waiting for the next annual attempt instead.
Improvement exams — for students who want a better grade
An improvement exam lets a student who already passed retake one or more subjects to try for a higher grade — useful if your overall percentage is just below a merit cut-off you're aiming for. Rules on how many subjects you can improve, and whether the improved or original marks count, vary by board.
- Improvement attempts are usually limited to a specific window — often only in the exam session immediately after your original result, or a defined later chance.
- Some boards keep whichever result is higher; others replace your original marks with the new attempt entirely.
- Improving your score can matter a lot for merit-based admissions — check with our Merit Calculator whether the improved percentage would actually help your aggregate before you commit to it.
